How to Think and Grow Rich

me holding a copy of think and grow rich

Recently I asked some friends and family for some suggestions on a new personal development book. I received a few different ideas, one of them being Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. I’d heard the book mentioned in several different places and the person who suggested it has his stuff together, so I got it and began reading.

Change Your Mindset, Change Your Reality

At this point I’m a little less than halfway through and I can already see why the book is such a classic. The book centers around modifying beliefs in order to manifest money. This makes a lot of sense. The universe has a funny way of giving us whatever we focus on, purposefully or not. By choosing to focus on money and having a positive attitude we can attract it into our lives.

The book calls for us to write out a specific goal involving money. We’re supposed to write how much we’d like to manifest into our lives, in what way, and by what time. We then read this statement twice daily, once in the morning and once again before we sleep. This is supposed to make the money eventually appear.

This may seem a little crazy at first. After all, how can simply believing you are going to get something make it happen? Actually, it makes a lot of sense.

People walk around with certain paradigms and beliefs about how the world works. These values are seemingly supported and then reinforced day in and day out. Most people think their views are correct, with everyone else ranging from mildly to severely incorrect. Depending on how much they agree with you of course. ;)

Cause and Effect

What if reality doesn’t really operate like you think it does? What if your beliefs on how the world works aren’t really based on reality? What if reality itself was instead based on the beliefs you held? Advanced physics has already demonstrated this to be true, but it isn’t really such a strange concept.

Have you ever seen someone with a world view based in anger walking around? You can tell when people are like this. It isn’t even all body language, there’s just a hostile energy. Undoubtedly they find something or someone to be angry at. The same thing happens with depressed, jealous, or loving world views.

In actuality, cause and effect are reversed. The “stuff” out there is actually consistently manifested by our own beliefs about the world.

We create our own worlds.

Manipulate Reality As You See Fit

If our beliefs dictate our reality, then it stands to reason that by changing our beliefs we can literally change reality. What a powerful concept!

Think and Grow Rich shows us how to do just that for our financial benefit. By repeating my intent to manifest a certain amount of money, I’m actively restructuring my subconscious belief systems to reflect this new value. As the book says, it’s about becoming money conscious.

Let Your Subconscious Do All The Work!

It really isn’t even that important to know where all the money is going to come from. Our subconscious is a heck of a lot smarter than our conscious, thinking mind. Within our subconscious minds lies everything we’ve ever seen or heard, even things we can’t remember. Some people even say we have access to a “collective unconscious” where we can access humanities knowledge as a whole.

Regardless, conscious thought is like the tip of the iceberg. How many thoughts can you hold in your head before it starts spinning? If you’re like me, one or two concurrent ideas or tasks is enough. Any more and I get cranky. :)

On the other hand, subconscious thought is infinitely more vast and powerful.

By using the ideas in Think and Grow Rich you’re basically telling your subconscious, “Hey, while I’m having fun you can go ahead and come up with a million dollar idea, is that cool?” “Yes master” “Goooood subconscious, good boy.”

Who else would do this for you?

Learning to program your subconscious is an incredible asset. I’ll be posting whether or not I achieve my rather lofty goal on December 31st, 2011. This book is definitely worth a read or four. It’s also genuinely entertaining and filled with some great historical data, including how some famous millionaires made their fortunes. I recommend it.

  3. I think this as a lot of merit! The subconscious is very powerful! It would explain why I seem to come up with my best ideas when I sort of let my conscious relax!

Me too. Often times the only time I let that happen is at night before I go to bed. It’s weird because I’ll have like 15 great ideas just before I go to sleep, then I forgot them in the morning! Doh!

I guess you meant Dec 31st, 2011? Do let us know how it goes!

Oops! I fixed it. Thanks for the heads up. I’m still doing my intention manifestation every night and day. I’ve actually been using it for a long of things, and it really seems to work! I’ve had a ton of synchronicities and other cool stuff too.

Nice review Fred. I did a rapid read through the book about 2 weeks ago as part of my research into helping me with one of my goals i.e getting out of debt and found it to be a true classic.

I intend reading it again, but this time going over it with a fine tooth comb and taking notes!

I’ve just read through “the science of getting rich” by Wallace D Wattles and am currently on “you were born rich” by Bob Proctor. Both books are along the same lines of Think and Grow rich with the primary focus on being visualising yourself as already rich. I will be posting reviews on my site as soon as I’m through.

    Once again, nice review!

Thanks for the comment! Our minds will do whatever they’re programmed to do with stark efficiency and precision. I think the hard part is actually rewriting that programming. I’ve found visualization to be a great tool to achieve that. By the way, what is your website? I’d love to read your reviews – I haven’t read either of those books.

I’ve tried the whole manifestation thing myself, although I simply wanted to know myself better and to know how life works. I know it’s a vague goal but I think it might be working. It seems to me the firststep to fix your situation is to fix yourself. In the last couple of years, I feel like I’ve gone through dramatic changes simply because I wanted to. The universe placed me in situations that were difficult for me to cope with but I believe were neccesary. Now, I think it’s trying to tell me to get my priorities straight. I gotta manifest me dough!

    • Fred Tracy says:

Ahh, yeah. Think and Grow Rich is a great book for manifesting money! It definitely worked for me. It’s funny because I made more the month I was really into that book than any other, and my traffic was much lower back then. Perhaps I should get back into it.

And intending to know how life works is a very noble goal. I haven’t tried that one quite yet, although I think perhaps it’s impossible to “know”, but rather to “feel” how it works. Maybe I’ll intend to “feel” how life works. :)

Yup it’s definitely a great book Fred.
